Alright Ladies...

Alright ladies, (middle school/early high school ladies) I’m talking to you. Yeah, you.

I see you girls out there, and sometimes I worry about all of you. This worry stems from the fact that my little sister is one of you, so I just want to look out for all of you.

With that being said, I want to point out a few things that I wish someone had pointed out to me when I was your age. Some of these don’t necessarily apply to my 14/15 year old self, but they still must be said.

First off, what is this trend (if you can even call it that) of wearing super short denim shorts with long spandex underneath them? I understand you’re trying to be a little more conservative and hide those buns, but let’s be real, it doesn’t make your shorts any longer. Despite the spandex, the shorts are still skimpy and way too short. To put it bluntly, it’s not cute. Spandex is meant to be worn at the gym, not under your denim shorts. So, just buy shorts that are a little longer. I know the last thing anyone your age wants to hear is to enjoy being a kid for longer, but it’s true. You don’t realize how young you really are, so cover up.

Secondly, stop hanging out at the skate park. It makes you look like groupies of the no-good skate park boys, who really aren’t good for you anyway. (Not to stereotype or generalize, but we all know that the Keene Skate Park is not somewhere young girls should be hanging out.) Get back on Main Street and buy some candy from Ye Goode Shoppe. Or go see a movie. Just get away from the skate park.

In all seriousness this time, don’t lose yourself. Going into high school can be tough, it is for any girl. But stay true to yourself. You’re probably going to grow apart from some of your middle school friends, and that’s okay because you’re going to be meeting a lot of new people. Just don’t do anything that doesn’t feel right to you, and always trust your instinct, it’s almost always right. Remember that a boy will never define who you are, so don’t let him try.

In light of my little sister who is one of my best friends, I hope that girls listen to this. I know number one and two are silly, but what I’m really saying is be your best self. If I could give my little sister any advice, that would be it. Never let someone make you compromise that. Everyone makes mistakes, and you learn from them, and that’s okay, but don’t lose yourself. Hold yourself to the highest standard (wow, I sound like my dad).

Love you, Becca.

  1. We agree with your advice. As we all get older we would love to tell our teenage self what we have learned and give her some advice.

Good job Amanda for caring. I hope those girls listen and get out of the skatepark and go get some candy!
